Spousal Open Work Permit in Canada – A Pathway for Families

At Plato Immigration, we understand that being with your loved ones is a priority. The Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) is designed to help couples stay together in Canada while also allowing the sponsored spouse or partner to work freely, gain Canadian experience, and support their family.

What is a Spousal Open Work Permit?

A Spousal Open Work Permit gives the spouse or common-law partner of a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or certain temporary residents (students/workers) the ability to work in Canada.

  • Unlike employer-specific permits, it is “open”, meaning you can work for any employer, in any location across Canada.
  • The duration of this permit generally matches the length of your spouse’s permit or until a decision is made on your permanent residency application.

Who Can Apply?

1. Spouse/Partner of a Canadian Citizen or PR

  • If your spouse is sponsoring you for permanent residency through the Inland Sponsorship Program, you may be eligible to apply for an open work permit while your application is in process.
  • This helps you work and support your family while waiting for PR approval.

2. Spouse/Partner of a Temporary Resident

  • If your spouse is in Canada on a valid study permit or a skilled work permit, you may also qualify for a spousal open work permit.
  • This ensures you can work while they study or work in Canada.
